Your Google contacts will now start appearing on your iPhone.

Now, any new contact created in your Gmail account will appear automatically in your iPhone.

If you wish to sync one step further and want the contacts you add in your iPhone to be synced with your Google Contacts account, the next steps are necessary.

How to synchronize your iPhone Contacts with your Gmail Contacts

To have your iPhone contacts in your Google account, you need to set Google Contacts as the default contacts source in your iPhone and export your older iPhone contacts to your Google account.

Set your Google Contacts as the Default

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap Contacts.
  3. Select ‘Default Account‘.
  4. Select your Google Account.

Now, new contacts that you add to your iPhone will appear in your Google contacts in Gmail, Google Drive, and Calendar.

If you want the contacts already present in your iPhone (legacy contacts)  to be in your Google Contacts as well, you will need to import them manually as follows:

Export your iPhone contacts to a .vcf file

  1. Go to https://www.icloud.com on your computer.
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID.
  3. Click “Contacts”.
  4. Wait for your contact list to fully load.
  5. Press Cmd+A (Mac) or Ctrl+A (Windows) to select all contacts (or select the contacts of your choice with CMD + clicking on them).
  6. In the top-right corner, click the export icon .
  7. Choose “Export vCard”.

This downloads a .vcf file containing the selected iCloud contacts in one file — compatible with Google Contacts for import.

Import your legacy iPhone contacts to Google Contacts

  1. Go to https://contacts.google.com.
  2. Sign in with your Google account.
  3. On the left-side menu, click on “Import”.
  4. Select the .vcf file you exported from iCloud.

Tip: You can select a destination label. For example, “iPhone Contacts” to keep them separated.

That’s it! Your iPhone and Google Contacts are now perfectly synced — and if you work in a team, you can go one step further by sharing these contacts with your colleagues in just a few clicks.

Beyond contacts synchronization: contacts sharing with colleagues

Are you working in a team? Contact sharing is the way!

If you want the contacts you have in your iPhone and/or in Google to be synchronized with the contacts of your colleagues, you can use a free tool like Shared Contacts Dashboard as follows:

  1. Install Shared Contacts Dashboard on the Google Workspace Marketplace
  2. Click on “Admin Install”
  3. Connect the application to your Google Contacts
  4. Select the contacts label you want to share (you can also share all your contacts by clicking the “G Contacts” label)
  5. Click on the “Share” icon
  6. Add the email address of the other user you want to share your contacts with
  7. Define permission (Read Only/Can Edit) :
    • Read Only if you want your colleague just to see the contacts
    • Can Edit will authorize your colleague to modify the shared contacts and add new contacts
  8. Then your colleague will receive an invitation and voilà!

Best Practices to Manage Synced Contacts

Merge or fix duplicates

Some contacts may have been duplicated during the import process; use the Merge & Fix option to clean up duplicate contacts in Google Contacts

Keep contacts organized

  • In Google Contacts, use Labels (like “Work” or “Family”) to group contacts to group your iOS contacts
  • Note: Even if the Google contacts are synchronized to your iPhone in one big list, the labels will not appear on your iOS device.

With your iPhone and Google Contacts now synchronized both ways, and your team connected through shared contact lists, you’ve set up a powerful system to keep everyone on the same page. No more lost numbers, no more outdated info — just clean, connected, and accessible contacts whenever you need them.
